Default Gearbox problem

Hi

I have a 2006 SV650S totally standard apart from a GIVI rack.

Recently it's started making a clacking sound and I'm experiencing temporary loss of drive when accelarating hard in 1st gear.

This only occurs in 1st gear when accelarating hard.

If I accelarate more modestly there are no problems.

None of the other gears are affected.

I'm going to study my Haynes manual tonight but was hoping someone with experience could point me in the right direction so I can decide if it's worth repairing.

Cheers for any help!

How old is your CSK? Slack chain? teeth knackered on the sprockets? can you move the chain side to side and pull it off the rear sprocket?

yeh id say check the chain, if its too loose and the sprockets are worn u may find its jumping over them..hence the clacking

I've found the front sprocket nut can work loose even if it's been locktighted, correctly torqued up and the tabbed washer done up properly...

I'd also check that.

Cheers guys! The bike is still on it's original chain and sprocket and has done 30,000 miles so this could well be an issue.

The chain can't be pulled right off the rear sprocket but comes away to reveal daylight. I'll have to get the cover off to check the state of the front sprocket.

Don't go for a cheap X-ring instead of a good O-ring.

Go for tsubaki, or DID.

That's what I mean.
I am saying don't go for a cheap X ring, because a good quality O ring will outlast it.

Then again, if you maintain your chain, I'm not at all convinced of the benefits of X rings.

oh sorry i do apologize lol i took it the wrong way! what ive read about them sounds fairly convincing, but i haven't had it long enough to test how long it will last but judging by the wear it gets in the time ive had it id say it will be quite a while before i have to change it
