Default Starter heading south

Hi Guys

I would love some of your wisdom or comments on this issue. My 2005 sv 650 has recently started to play up. When I go to start up the bike as normal the starter makes a attempts to start but doesnt. After another few pushs of the starter button it starts up. The battery is fully charged so cant think what it is. Do electric starters on SV normally go pear sharped.

Any Ideas!!!
Thanks
D

Good evening.

They do work a little harder as the SV is a twin & consequently harder to turn over than a four cylinder engine.
Often when the starter turn slowly most folks assume it's going west. However, often it's the starter solenoid. To test this, bridge the contacts with a stout piece of metal, or a jump lead clamp.
If your starter turns normally, then it's most likely the solenoid is at fault.

Cheers.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I am a bit of numty head so i am not great with the mechanics, I have located the starter solenoid underneath the front seat.

Please can you explain this test of the solenoid a little bit more

You could always come to Frith St tonight, meet the Soho Massive and get one of our more knowledgable bods to have a look/listen.

Good afternoon.

All the solenoid does is take current from the battery, & feed it to the starter motor.
To bridge the terminals, you take a stout piece of metal or, as I said a jump lead clamp & join the incoming power lead (from the battery) to the outgoing lead (to the starter motor).
This will effectively do the job of the solenoid, whilst bypassing its internal contacts.
You will get some sparking at the terminals when you do this, hence the need for a sturdy item. Be ready to remove it sharply when the engine starts.

Cheers.
