Default External HDD problems

Seagate FreeAgent 640GB

Was in use, a music program was doing some sort of sorting but taking ages so the system was turned off mid-process. Suspect this corrupted something as on next boot it was returning the error:

Quote:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0).
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

Ran it in Windows and executed chkdsk /f and it can now be accessed, but the file structure seems to be strangely bent. What were subfolders are now top level and such.

Is there any way to get it back? At the moment going down the route of recover, reformat and reorganise it all.

Is there any chance of damage to the drive due to this?

The SMART data thing on ubuntu disk utility showed a healthy drive.

Cheers

Chris

YC these may help

I would take a backup of anything important before you do out. Killed two WD 2.5" portables with similar issues with University PC's

Do you need to run it NTFS? Linux support for it is pretty new compared to the other file systems. Least you don't have to find a windows machine to do chkdisk on if it gets mangled again this way.

Corrupted master file table is bad for the data on the dirve but it will do no harm to the physical bits. I would run a full test using the seagate diagnostics just to be 100% confident in the drive though, then reformat and rebuild. Maybe go FAT32 to preserve windows Linux compatibility if you need it?

recover data , then download Hirens Boot CD and run the HDD diagnostic tools to make sure the drive has no errors.
