Hi All,
Just been on the phone to Suzuki to enquire about a slight problem I have with the Scottoiler touring kit I had fitted by Ken Roberts Mototrcycles in Newport, and the fact that it has cracked the number plate hanger with the weight of the touring kit behind the number plate Basically it's an after market product and not covered by warranty. Thats fine! I have just phoned Scottoiler themselves to take it up with them, and they advised me that they have a list of bikes that the RMV (Touring kit) is not suitbale for to be fitted to : he SV650 K4 being one of them. SO, I now have a wonderful time within the next hour or so, trying to get Ken Roberts to fix it, as they fitted it! Am i right or wrong here? as scottoiler give a list to all their suppliers of the bikes not to fit this to? - I am so pi$$ed off! ![]() |

Stay calm Mass, but give the ******* hell!
This is NEGLIGANCE by the dealer. no more, no less. It borders on incompetance, but I think we know that already. Nice to know that Scottoiler actually do have customer care! Keep us in the know with this one. |

I might be wrong but if you made the request and they are simply fitting it for you I'm not sure where the liability for checking compatability lies. It's like if you take a sick vehicle to a mechanic and tell them to fix it by replacing x and it does not cure the problem, you still have to pay as the mechanic is simply doing what you asked them to do. I'm not condoning what the dealer has done here but if they cannot be reasonably expected to know that the touring kit is not suitable for your model then I don't think they are liable unless they recommended it.

I know that mass asked them to supply and fit a Scottoiler. i think that due to the mileage the bike was going to cover, the dealer suggested the touring kit?
If you ask the dealer to supply and fit something to your bike, you expect them to check for compatibility. If I took my bike in and said it needs new brake pads, I wouldn't expect them to fit the pads from a CB125 to my Blackbird. If the dealer doesn't have the skills to fit the parts, then they should get a competent person to fit em. |

This is a generic accessory so you still need to ask yourself was it reasonable that the dealer should know of models that are not compatible. This does not sound like incompetent fitting unless of course the mounting point was clearly not strong enough - that would open up a whole new argument of course. As I don't have this model I can't judge that one. .

Well, let's say that the worse case scenario happens, and the touring kit falls off with the number plate hanger, throwing oil onto the back wheel, causing the rider to lose control of the bike.
The liability rests where? I would have to say it is the dealer. A decent dealer would check that it is ok to fit the part to that model of bike, even if it is just to cover his own back, should anything bad happen. It's common sense. It's the same as whenI had my SV, Givi didn't make a wingrack to fit it, as they were not confident of the subframe of the SV being able to take the weight, leaving me to get the normal top box rack from them, with the pl kit to fit sidecases. That is the action of a responsible company. I fitted the heated grips to Mass' SV. If anything goes wrong with them, i.e. they slide off in his hands while riding, then the responsibility is with me. Correct? |

Again, I'm not trying to condone the dealer's actions here, but should it go to court a solicitor will ask these same questions. It all comes down to this "R" word. Best of luck to The Maas in getting this sorted to his satisfaction. .

No problem, Sir! I have heard enough about this dealer though to know not to ever go there! I also know that he refuses to sell spare parts to customers unless they are trained mechanics, as he doesn't want the liability of anything going wrong if they are fitted by an incompetent person.
Surely if he goes to those kinds of lengths to ensure he isn't liable, then he should check his own work a little more closely? And as for his customer service, we all know how many miles Mass does each week, and a good dealer would look after that customer, as the money they would make on servicing would easily outweigh the profit from selling him the bike in the first place! Shot himself in the foot big tim, imo. |
