Default Getting a bike going after massive lay-up?

I know I know this has been done to death, ressurected and zombified many times.

I'm after some specific advice for getting an old 400 back to life.
I'm doing this for friend some point next week and really need an 'idiots' list of what to check/ clean/ t**t with a hammer

The bike hasn't turned over properly since 2008 (we think!) and was running like a bike of s*** then.

What the things that need checked/ replaced to get it going again?

Thanks in advance and over to you

It may help to know what it is?

I had a Bindit400 laid up for years after the missus went "roaming in the gloamin" with it.
Apart from crash damage, changed the blued tyres and stripped and cleaned carbs, new diaphrams and jets so it would be back to running like a dog...just like standard!
New battery, dumped old fuel.
That was enough to get it screamin again.

Be lucky.

Sparks and fuel is a good place to start, then battery--get the engine running and do the other bits after
It some times helps to turn the engine over a couple of times while the plugs are removed to get a bit of oil round the engine before you fire it up.

id change the fuel or at least slosh it around to try and move some of the carp that might have settled near the fuel tap.
spark plugs/oil/check air filter for illegal immigrants and if your trying to start it, try and start it outside the shed/garage. i made this mistake with my old DT125MX, 2 stroke smoke gets very thick and chokes rather easily haha

Carb 'O' rings on the 400 are meant to cause running problems
