Default Fog

Guys, I know I posted this before the site went down, but it must have been lost.

Ok, so what do we do in fog?

We have no fog lights, so cars can hardly see us I guess!

Hmm...

Be bloody careful and try to use your brake light as a fog light when you can.

its a tricky one really, i dont know exactly whats recommended, and im interested to hear other peoples opinions.

personally if i can see cars infront of me on a dual carageway, i try to keep my speed up and tuck in between cars on a motorway to prevent me from being rear ended. use my brake lights to show that im slowing, even though i may not be using the brakes.

keep your visor down, cos a tiny bit of fog in there will cause it to mist up.

on A roads i can see better on just a dipped, i just dazzle myself if i use full beam, and go a bit slower,
if i see im my mirrors that i car is approaching from the rear (you can usually see as their lights illuminate everything) then i either get on the gas a bit (if i can see where im going) or drag my brakelights on a bit and stick it in a low gear to produce more noise. . .

i find praying usually helps.

Thanks guys, all thought I've had previously.

Why don't bikes have fog lights? At least a brighter light on the rear or something.

I was riding home on the motorway last week and the fog was terrible, stuck myself fairly close to a car, but not close enough to rear end it, with enough gap to slip into the hard shoulder should needs be.

Bloke on a Fazer seemed to get offended that I was going 2mph faster than him and overtook him slowly, so he gassed it and zoomed off into the distance!

People are stupid in the fog, car drivers were doing at least 80mph through it, and I couldn't see 100m into the distance

Agreed. To be fair to them, it's partly psychological. In fog, there are fewer reference points, so the sense of speed is decreased, so people will often do the same speed as normal (believeing they're going slower), and sometimes even a bit quicker. It's similar to the reason why the Le Mans 24hr best laptimes are usually at night, in spite of the track being colder, etc.

I'd say, keep a reasonable speed up (you're less likely to be rear-ended if their closing speed is 10mph, rather than 50...), but leave even more stopping distance, so you can brake at a slower rate if someone is right behind you.

I guess the reason bikes don't have fog lights is because they'd be too close to the brake light to make telling the difference between them difficult.

I hate riding in fog but make sure I keep a good look in my mirrors as well as straight ahead.

I think some bikes do have fog lights as standard. The police roadcraft guide has warnings to turn off your rear foglight once you come out of any fog so you don't obscure the brake light. I'm guessing that means they're to be found on big tourers - beemers, pan europeans, etc.

Reckon praying is best...

Rode the last 10 miles home tonight in patchy fog and generally had problems before that as I think the moisture in the air was such that it was condensing on the outside of my visor and cage drivers were driving like they could see to the moon and back...

The fog was near freezing so having been pretty comfortable before my fingers nearly dropped off...

Don't know about fog lights I'd settle for bikes having decent lights...

Still better than sitting in a nice warm car

Sveedy - The law says to only use rear fog lights when visability is below a 100 metres. I think the maximum fine is, wait for it .....£1000 for using them when visability is better than 100 metres. My view is they should only be used when nobody can be seen behind. If traffic is behind they only dazzle. In other words they should be used like headlights.
I would like to fit one to my bike but what with the heated grips and SatNav etc would the generator cope with the extra usage.
