my exhaust downpipe is looking a bit manky these days - any magic way to restore it or is it just metal polish and elbow grease?

In short no. They go gold, then brown and then yuk. I did manage to polish mine back to new on one occasion but it was so much work.
I just accept the gold colour and polish moderatley every time I clean the bike with solvol or belgum alu. John

Mine took about 15 - 20 mins, started with 1000 grit wet & dry then went to 1200, finished off with fine wire wool & solvo autosol, GAN.

There is a magic way!
Alloy Cleaner which you can get from Halfords, there is a post somewhere about it. Great stuff. Spray it on your down pipe, leave it for a couple of minutes and then wash it off. Depending on how bad the downpipe is, you might have to do it a couple of times but it brings it back as good as new. Be careful about getting the stuff on paintwork though, if it strips the crap off the downpipe so effectively, its gotta be pretty corrosive. |

Yeah it's comma alloy wheel cleaner. To be honest it smells like the same acid they put in bathroom limescale remover sprays. It does work a treat though. Just be sure to rinse it well.

Get a bike with a fairing and never suffer from exhaust discolouration again!
