Me too, I got the socket from a local car parts place, had two crocodile clips on it so you could connect the socket up to a car battery (???) but snip them off and connect to your bike and works just fine.

All that Halfords had was a chav one with built in neon lights

Sounds like the one I have. Not a lot of money from memory (round £3 mark?), has its own has inline fuse so you can connect it directly to the battery. This means you can charge your phone without the bike's ignition on.

I stole the power for gps from the tail light when i switched to led-tail light. it is "behind" a braker and only operates when power / lights are on. That is no problem since in Finland you are supposed to have the lights on 24/7

Perhaps what I should have said was does it make any difference which connector on the cig socket holds the earth.

Judging by the instructions here http://www.xrv.org.uk/articles/artic...nd_lighter.php

it doesn't

Funny that this thread should pop up! Being that I've recently offered advice via PM to a few members of the forum!

Personally, I'm the same as you lot, and use a cigarette lighter socket. Made up my own from parts. Probably cost me less than £3. Wired from the live ignition (in parallel to the ignition) so that it only works when the ignition is on.

But then, some folks are posh. After talking to SoulKiss, he has, or will have at least, a USB hub in his bike!
