Default For Sale: One Teenage Son......

OK, Jelster Jnr is up for sale...

The capital cost is low, but the maintenance bills are becoming a pain. Yesterday just about broke the camels back.

"Dad, my bike won't start, can you help ?" (He's at college and I'm about 20 miles away)

Get to college, yep he's right, it won't start. Only thing to do is hire a van and pick it up so I can drop it off at a local dealer, which I did this morning.

Now bear in mind that said scooter is only 13 months old and "Dad" paid £1700 for it, new. I wanted him to have some Independence and didn't want to be a taxi every weekend... Well turns out that the spark plug had burnt out, but on further investigation it seems that it is out of 2 stroke oil AND almost out of water (liquid cooled).

Looks like the head is knackered and it's going to cost a few quid to put right. Guess who is expected to pick up the bill ? Yeah, Bank of Dad, again.... Although he's going to have to pay me back, it's his fault, I've told him to book it in for a service, and told him to keep an eye on his levels.

His driving lessons are starting to hurt (well the cost of them) and I'm dreading what happens if he passes his test in January (at least he won't be driving my car, but the Mrs is getting worried ). We also have to consider general running costs, such as power, heating and of course 70% of the food that comes into the house.

I need to move him on as the expected bills from the next 4 years of University are going to stop me buying my MV F4, and it has to be one or the other....

Good points... Errrmmm let me see...... Oh, yes, he does the washing up (occasionally), he's girlfriend is pretty, and if you ever needed a professional on line war game player, I'm sure he'd do very well - he's had 1000's of hours practice......

Any offers ?

I love him really, just needed to vent some anger out.....

Yeah, but it doesn't pay much, covers his petrol costs and maybe 1 night out a month.

The purse strings have to be cut at some point

Personally, I came from a low income background, and worked what was almost a full time job, whilst at college. I then lasted 4 months at uni (but I was still working whilst there).

Any of my kids think I'm going to be half as generous as you Jestler, and they have another thing coming! Once they're 16, they can pay their way or go without, and they'll certainly get no help in arranging credit for themselves (my folks declared bankruptcy).

Just my 2p on the subject.

Also seen your post in "House buying" & I've got to say, it makes sense. I lived with a guy at uni who's parents owned the house. Even he was expected to pay rent (but paid less than us in exchange for doing odd jobs etc). Even so, it meant the rules were a lot more relaxed on the rental agreement, and so the experience was better IMO.

Sounds like your kid is a lucky one! I just feel like mine will be pushed to make (and learn from) their own mistakes far earlier (not that your kid hasn't don't that Jestler).

I know this was tongue in cheek, but I'm appalled at his lack of gratitude and bad attitude to looking after bike. I would be inclined not to pay for any driving lessons until he has paid to sort out the bike.

I am generous to my kids, have bought them each cars and they have to look after them and pay running costs. They look after what I give them and never ask for stuff. I know I'm lucky, but they know I won't bail them if they have been negligent.

Owning a 19 year old near identical model you have my sympathy. He crimes are usually financial and involve bank of mum and dad.

We had to loan him the money to buy his van required for work. He has never repaid a penny of the £2000. When he hit a car and ran/got caught Dad had to buy off the driver of the damaged car.

When he produced a granddaughter for us. We again have to pay for cot, cloths baby seats, pictures, nappies.

Latest crimes are he will not pay his mum her £20/week board as he need the money to buy presents for christmas and has used this excuse since mid November. Revenge is planned. He is getting no christmas presents as they would have been bought with the board he has not paid.
