Default Chain Breakage

A friend of mine who owns a 1997 thundercat replaced his chain last year for a DID gold xring with sprockets. Less than 2000 miles later it snapped carrering into the rear of his engine and basically damaging all the soft bits. and covering his rear wheel with a nice healthy mixture of coolant and oil !!

Now I havent seen the Chain in any great detail yet but it does have tiny fractures all over and it didnt break at the soft link. I would also state that the chain was lubed and checked on a regular basis. it was aligned with a laser and this was also checked on a regular basis.

I have advised him to write to the manufacturers and who he got it from, as this has basically written his bike off and could have killed him.

Anyone else had experience with DID or other makes can anyone reccomend any better makes? Or suggest why it may have happened.

If I get chance I will post some piccies of it.

Oh that's a bit of a worry. I've just had the same chain fitted with JT sprockets on the advise of the dealer as he said that they were top quality. I hope it's just a one off!

DID kit is fitted as OE to a lot of bikes (SV650 included) and is generally very good quality. I would imagine this was a one off (assuming the chain was not over-tight)

that is a worry.DID are a top quality chain so I would question if it was genuine. If it was ,then straight on to the importer or retailer for a full investigation.Mention trading standards if you get any bull from them.

Agreed.

Interesting, I've used Busters for a number of years and at least ten chain kits, never had any problem, although I prefered the triple "S" chains myself.

I find it hard to believe they would supply a "fake", and wouls suspect either it was fitted to tight or it was defective from the factory.

I'd be interested to see close up pics as you say there were other stress fractures.

Cheers Mark.
