Default bike test

The moped user in my house has booked his bike test (on a 125).

He's been riding the moped for 2 years so he's not a complete numpty...just a bit reckless...!

He asked me for advice for the test so I've told him, "Book some lessons". He doens't want to do this - his rationale being that if it takes him 3 tests to pass then that's going to be less time than a day's worth of lessons & test on top.

He thinks his u-turn will be fine & he'll be hiring a bike.

I have offered a few tips:

Don't bother filtering, the examiner won't take you anywhere where you're likely to get bogged in traffic to have to filter.
Exaggerate looking into your mirrors/looking at speed signs - so the examiners knows you're looking at them.
Don't undertake.

Anything else?

Make sure whatever he does that he checks and turns off his indicators.
Hope the examiner takes his car instead of his bike

On a 125 it wont be a problem but when i did my test i was told if i go into a NSL area and dont go for an overtake and sit there at below the speed limit behind a car i would get marked down for hesitency.

Fortunately i didnt heistate and managed to get the extra 15mph scrubbed off before the examiner had got behind me to realise i was doing 75 to overtake!!

Passed aswell!

Your aloud to speed while overtaking as long as it safe and is soley for the purpose of getting past the vehicle safely (say they sped up slightly while you were overtaking), the when your past you must get to the inside lane and reduce your speed to the limit again.

just out of interest did he do his cbt on a geared 125 rather than a twist and go / 50cc bike cause if he didnt i dont think that his cbt will cover him for riding a 125 with gears. Also if he has only been riding scooters he will need time to get used to a clutch as not being able to slip it is whats going to do him in on the uturn. Personally id see if he can get a 1 or 2 hour lesson rather than book a whole day and see what the instructor has to say about his riding and to make sure that he is comfortable on a geared 125 as thats whats he going to be taking he test on and thats a lot different to ride than a twist and go scooter.

Other than that tips would be dont rush, dont filter and check your mirrors at every sign and make sure you do all your lifesavers obviously.

Whilst that's definitely the common sense approach and the one I'd adopt (possibly tweaking the "reduce your speed to the limit again" bit tho!) I'm *reasonably* certain that speed limits are not dynamic but fixed. Ie. if you want to overtake that car doing 59mph on an NSL road, you'd better not go faster than 60mph to do it otherwise you'll be breaking the law. Yes, you'd also likely die if you had to overtake every vehicle at bang on 60, but hey, you wouldn't die a crim

he hired a 125 bike a couple of months ago on the strength of his moped cbt (hopefully he wasn't breaking the law!).

Not sure if his 2nd year is up yet - or if it's going to be up shortly - I'll ask!

I am a driving instructor and this is rubbish, the speed limits should not be broken, otherwise why have them, they are mandatory

Surely getting him to have a couple of lesson would be cheaper than resiting test?

From what you told me about him the other week, I think at least one day spent with an instructor to at least calm him down would be good

Advice? I don't know, its been so long now..
