I have just inherited a JVC video camera using the 'compact video system' basically the tapes are about the same size as a packet of fags, was going to mount it on the bike for rideouts but was wondering whether anyone else still uses tape or is everyone now on digital or HD ? Im a complete novice at video cameras so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Stew |

Cant see any reason why not - the main problem I guess would be mounting the thing - Im guessing its the old Hi8 format? Therefore I expect the camera is pretty weighty? I know there are suction cups which you can mount to the fairing - this then screws into the base of the cam, although not sure how much force it would take to whip it off and let it fly down the road...?
I think Evotech do a mount which secures onto the top of the filler cap, using the filler cap bolts - that would work - not sure how much it is tho... Getting the format onto the computer is possible too - I'm sure some better informed folk on here can advise - I think you can buy a USB device that plugs into the cam using one of the plugs, if your computer isnt specced to do it... HTH, but prob doesnt... ![]() Billy. |

No idea, I wouldnt have thought it matters what you use, the outcomes is still the same, its just more awkward to get the footage where you want it. I use digital/Hd though.

I've got a Hi8 camera. It done its job in its day (2001-2004), but I never use it anymore due to the fact it takes so long to convert.
I like using digital as its so easy to get on my PC, burn onto DVD, and even put online if you want. Easy to make copies without having to sit through the whole 4 hour video tape. I should get mine out again... Anyone know an easy way to convert Hi8 tapes into digital.. Got some old stuff i'd love to put online (cars though im afraid). |

Cheers guys, was thinking of mounting it near the o/s rear peg, low down and wide angle to give a nice effect, something a bit different from the norm although tbh its probably been done a million times by fellow ORG.ers the tapes have the logo, VHS C on them btw.

Check out BlueSV650S's youtube site. He's mounted his down on the lower front side fairing. Good to hear the engine note, as well as get a nice low down but clear view of the racetrack.

The main problem is what you are going to with footage once its been shot....by the sounds of it, its an analog camcorder....
Right the only way to get that on the comp, will be by using analong-digital conveter. I haven't done this before as I have always used digital systems, i'm sure its possiable but have no idea of the cost. Also can you still buy replacement tape stock for these cameras? Analaog suffers from drop out quite badly, the quality of the image will degarde over time with the tape being used, and used again. I think the SD Cams seem to be the best way to go at the moment, very easy to use and to download and edit with. |
