Default What are the advantages of motorbike specific sat navs?

Apart from waterproofing and the size of the buttons to push or "buttons" on the touch sensetive screen? Am finally thinking about getting one.

Mounting designs - you dont want it falling off, plus ease of removal.I find verbal instructions sufficient, so run tomtom on a mobile phone in my pocket linked to an earpiece.

I'm with Tigersaw, I have Co Pilot on my T Mobile Compact 3 and use an earpiece if going somewhere I don't know.
Voice only seems to work 99% of the time but I have to admit that when approaching a funny junction/roundabout a picture would be useful. It's not too bad though cos if I do take the wrong exit I can hear it bleep as it starts to adjust the route. When I hear the bleep I turn round and get back on course.

My oxford tankbag top pocket leaks a little, if it was me I'd put it in a clear baggy too.

I reckon I'd get a RAM mount which seem to be very good. Thinking about getting a Garmin around 130- 150 quid. Nice and slim. Want the speed camera yearly thing too. Anyone got that? Cyclops it's called I think.

Don't have any experience of phone based systems, only the Garmin Zumo (550).

Weather resistance is obviously main priority, also the mount system I guess. The Zumo 550 comes with both bike and car mounts. There are functions which recognise which mount it is in and it behaves accordingly. You can add a traffic receiver if hold-ups are a big issue.

The Zumo is not without some niggles, but as a piece of kit it is pretty impressive. Mp3 player, bluetooth for phone if you must, view your favourite photos, and it tells you where you are! Useful stuff I'm not sure you get in the phone systems is finding places near somewhere (fuel, banks, hotel, eatery etc), oh yes the bike mount activates a fuel gauge too (have to remember to reset when you fill up mind), then it reminds you when you get low on fuel and one touch gives you the nearest fuel station.

Garmin service is pretty damn good. I just did a firmware update today, and updated a voice file too which has been improved. Oh yes, it's text-to-speech (TTS) on the 550 so you get directions stating street names rather than simply "turn left" etc.

I loaded a camera database onto mine with camera type announced rather than just a "bong" (instead it's "warning, Gatso ahead"). All sorts of possibilities. You can also "fly" your tracks in Google Earth, so if you did a really good route on holiday somewhere you can show friends the road.

I got mine from here .

That is something I have used on more than one occasion when in a strange area.

One of the other big advantages is if by chance you are in a strange area, its late at night and p1$$ing down you wont need to try and read a soggy map

But you should remember its an aid, not a be all end all solution, just look at the idiots who blindly follow the voice into a 4ft deep ford

All this is very good but what really justifies the extra ?100+ more than a car one? I'll be using it 90% of the time in the van and can get away with a plastic bag if it rains.
