Default Regulator Rectifier questions

Gratings!

I'va had a scoot on the search and it didn't answer my questions, so-

I think my reg/rec is on the way out- bike is not starting to easily at the moment and a fear it's cos the battery's a little weak (though gonna charge that tonight to see if it makes a difference)- the battery is a dry-cell that is only a few months old.

The reg.rec I've got was second hand on install, so I can't be certain it's still in good working order (if anything, under charging the battery).

So- I've read about modding Honda units for the SV as they're usually more reliable, but as with all else on the bike, I'd rather not bother as most things end up taking more effort than they sound.

Is there an aftermarket reg/rec for the SV that is more durable than the Suzuki one but fits without being chopped, or is it inherent in the design that it wears out regularly? It's a 1999 model and apparently on it's 3rd unit.

Cheers as ever

the d

Before you do anything get a cheap multitester and check the charging system as per Sid Squids posts on here. Then start spending money if required to fix what you will then know to be the problem.

Will do- dad's got one- it's probably at Bro's next door, so easy to sort.

With a fully charged battery and the reg/rec working fine, should the bike jumpt to a start as soon as I touch the button?

I've noticed before with home start that when the bike is being jump started from a vehicle or multi-tool (dunno what they're called- got a battery and air compressor in etc), the bike starts immediately, whereas when I normally start the bike from cold, it trys to turn over and doesn't, then I hit the starter again and it fires up.

I fitted the gsxr 750 one only cost about £10 off flebay, it worked fine for as long as I had the bike. Seemed a lot bigger than the SV unit, so would keep cooler.

If it's bigger, will it need modding to bolt on? Are the connections the same?

Cheers

The honda one on the curvy SV is pretty easy, you do need to chop the connectors but it bolts right on in the right place pretty much as standard which is nice. I've got a K2 reg/rec which works perfectly in the garage, it came to me new and I only fitted it to test it, but it's got a different plug from earlier models, just one plug GSXR style rather than 2 like the older SV ones... For sale should you want it
