Default Gear selector prob

I did the wirral egg run yesterday which was absolutley brill except for a gear problem, basically I could get it in to first gear but it then wouldnt release in to second or vice versa, it meant spending a good part of the 90 min run holding the clutch in cos it wouldnt go into neutral either, once running though and a bit of speed built up it was fine, any ideas whats causing it on me 2001 curvey ? is it normal or is the gear selector shagged ? I topped the oil up recently and might have used a 15/40 instead of a 10/40 could that be a reason ?
Thanks guys

Is your chain tight enough (ie, not too slack)?
What about the clutch? Does it need tightening? Mine bites when the lever is quite far out, so selecting neutral when stopped is easier.

If you think they're okay, you might find that rolling yourself forward a few inches and trying again will work.

Thanks JG, everything seems ok tbh, I was wondering if the extra heat build up cos of sitting in basically a huge traffic jam for the first couple of miles of the egg run could have caused it, once out of the towns it was ok again.

I found with my SV the oil level was crucial to being able to find neutral, if it was higher or lower than middle full (in the window) or the chain was a little too tight or loose, i couldnt find neutral without turning the engine off.

Hi Stewie, was gonna suggest checking that the lever isn't binding and might need an oil, but I reckon it could have been the heat causing the clutch plates to swell.

Stew, on that, I used to have to spray a bit of WD40 on the pivot on the selector and that seemed to clear it up after a while. Used to get it a bit myself on that one. Try the WD40 trick first and take her out for a spin.

theres a little plastic cover, on the left hand side, in front of the frame..pretty sure the front sprocket is behind it. Got the clutch cable attached to it. Damn sure if you stick your head under your bike you'll see a massive lump of oily crud stuck behind that.

Last time this happened to me I sat with a pointy stick and poked the whole lot out. It cured my problem.....try it you never know!!

well that as well. On Suzy we keep a good eye on this problem. When Im Indoors used to use her for commuting ( a lot more than me) it used to happen a lot in winter. He turned up at my house once and could only use 2nd, 4th and upwards gears. After a general clean up of all the pivots and cleaning out behind that cover it cured her
