I've been a bit lazy and haven't noted down the mileage on my company van for work use only. I don't use it for private mileage at all and need to know if the tax office need the daily mileage or if a weekly will do so I don't get fined. My company don't seem to really know what the score is which is a bit of a joke.
Anyone know? I use my van to travel to approximately 4 different sites a day. |

Last time I played this game was when I had my own company (tax reasons only) about ten years back. Then all I did was take the mileage every six months or so and guestimate monthly mileage. I'm sure you're supposed to be more diligent than that but so long as it looks about right and you're obviously not taking the micky then I suspect it'll be fine.

That's sort of what I'm doing. I just don't want to have to make up daily mileages! I can do weekly no problems. It's a bit silly really because I can go to say 7 sites in a day and either xig zag across London to get to them or do them all in a round trip. Also I don't enter incidental bits and bobs like visiting suppliers and such. I'm probably worrying about nothing. I'll get my boss to send me the fuel card bill to make sure it's all in order.

My company are pretty strict with this kind of thing and I have to submit a mileage form no later that 6th of the following month showing the month start mileage, end mileage all daily business mileage. I tend to keep a pocket diary in the car and have got into the habit of noting start and end mileage each day. If I forget to write it down, I can usually remember where I've been and just use Google maps to work out how far I've travelled.

I make my lad record his mileage, as it is a privately owned vehicle he uses for work. His employers won't pay a mileage allowance, but supply him with a fuel card. So he needs to recover the running costs as a mileage allowance from the tax man.
TBH, I think there is something quite wrong about employers expecting staff to provide vehicles for business use. They justify it by saying staff have previously abused and damaged company vehicles so they will no longer provide them. As my employers will not fuel my company car. I have to submit an expenses claim for business mileage. That way it is me out of pocket if I don't do my expenses

I have a company car and manage a team of 15 others who have company cars and our company latest policy states that a record of daily Buisness and Private mileage must be recorded by all employees incase the Tax office requires it!
I just get them to do Daily business mileage with a description of where they have been eg Return Basildon 140 miles. Although all are supplied with Fuel cards mileage must be recorded at al times HTH |

Well I've just spoken to someone in the tax office and they say if the van's only used for company use then they don't need to know the mileage and that my company must be asking for the mileages for their own use (To make sure we're not using their fuel?). She said that if it was used for private mileage then 3K would be added to my tax code.
Does that all sound right? If so then I've nothing to worry about and they can get the mileages on a weekly basis. |

The milage has nothing to do with what you pay the tax man as far as I'm aware.
I have a company car, (to be fair a rubbish one by all accounts) To figure it out you find out whether you pay 22% or 40% income tax. If your company car is for private use aswell, then they take the 'list price' of the car provided to you. They then take your income tax pecentage of the car.....so say its a ?10k car and you pay 40% income tax, then it works out at ?4k, then depending on the emmisions of the car in question you pay a final percentage of the ?4k to the tax man.....so say its a low emmision car you would pay 15% of the ?4k to the tax man so 15% of ?4k = 600 / 12 = ?50 a month extra tax you pay. But this amount is taken from the ?5700 that you get tax free a year anyway. so your tax code would change from say 570L to 100L None of that will probably make any sense, but it all irrelevant anyway as your van is for business use only so it doesnt effect you. |

It's a van which I believe has totally different rules which they've made worse for us due to company car owners getting vans to escape the high taxation.
THink I'll just send in the mileages and cross the bridge if I come to it. |
