Default New owners first impressions and a couple of questions.

Hi All

Well I got my new (to me) SV home. The bike is a very clean 99 Treg. I'm crap at assessing anything about a bike until I have a few hundred miles on it normally, but with the SV I noticed within about 500 yards how under sprung and under damped the front forks are. Christ they are awful aren’t they! I'll need to do something about them ASAP! I'll start with springs, I gather progressives are popular? Does anyone supply springs to suit your weight for the SV?

The other thing I've noticed is it is running a bit weak and I'm guessing it hasn't been rejetted since having the Renegade can fitted. I've been searching the archives and I see needle shimming and swapping the MJs is popular. I'll do that to it and will have the washers lying around somewhere I'm sure. What I couldn't find out was the MJ size for when you've had a race can fitted and no other modifications done? Anyone recommend a MJ size please? I'll probably progress the induction side later on and will get it set up on a dyno, but for now I'll just up the MJs to avoid detonation or such like!

The other thing I’ve noticed, and is my main concern, is that the front cylinder is a bit rattly when warm? Searching the archives I se this is very common and is likely to be the cam chain tensioner and/or worn cam chains? If I have this right I can remove the tensioner and just make sure it’s not seized before delving deeper, right?

These things aside, I’m very pleased with the bike. My wrists tell me I should have hung out for a naked Sv, but hey ho, I’m stuck with it now. I used to have a Honda Bros which I played around with and thoroughly enjoyed owning and modifying. The Sv strikes me as very similar in many ways and I suspect I’ll end up playing around/modifying this in similar ways. It sure felt good to be back on a light weight V twin again!

nice looking bike, nice and clean, you can do wonders with the front end but i'm not the one to talk to about that.

I know, I thought I'd gone to the next page of threads, but went to the last by mistake!
