Default Help, Proble with my car!!

Help, please oh wise peeps of the ORG.

I have a shed to go to and from work in the form of a 1994 Diesel mondeo. Now this morning I noticed the Battery light on the Dash was lit and the Rev counter was stuck on 0. All was ok on the drive home last night.

When I got to work I lifted the bonnet as I thought it could have been one of the belts from the alternator and engine had come off, but no all the visible belts were in place and spinning with no apparent slippage. There was also no squealing associated whit the usual drop out of a rev counter when you go through a puddle etc.

I have not tested the battery voltage yet to see if its getting a charge. Actually I need to test the fuses as well but I amuse the dash as a whole would have a fuse not the rev counter on its own??

But I was just wondering if anyone might know of a problem associated with these issues??

Just been browsing a couple of car forums, and apparantly its the alternator.

A bloke had same problem, battery light on and rev counter not working. It appears the rev counter in some diesels is powered from the alternator , so my symptoms are a good sign its gone.

If it's still running OK, could it be the pick-up that's goosed? Or have you been running on the battery? Most battery shops have a tester that will place a load on the alternator to check if it is good.

not sure if i have been running on the batery, probabl as the warning light came on and off intermitantly on the drive back from southampton last week, but today was on all the time and the rev counter has gone. I am borowing a multi meter and doing some voltage checks , and earth bonding checks.
