Oh man, the other night I was working in my garage on the race bike. Its a large double garage that opens onto a road at the rear of my house, about 80 feet away from the house and out of sight.

Its got my race bike, power tools, generator and piles of other stuff. So, I got distracted by the kids wanting their scooters and managed to go out to the boozer with my dad for the night.

I left the main garage doors wide open, keys in the bike, garage alarm off etc all night and half of the next day. Nothing missing at all. Phew!

if its in a city centre then the thieves most likely won't nick it - they'll think its a baited bike. but i still wouldn't do it although the missus did in the middle of town once and sure enough it was still there when she got back.

I've ridden up the street having forgotten to put my helmet on

If you go to any bike shop you can get stretchy cable designed to remind you to take a disc lock off. Might be worth buying one (for a whole £2) to connect to your jacket + key!

Word of warning: If your bike is stolen by the key your insurance won't cover it. CCTV in a town centre would pretty much confirm how it had been taken.

I leave the key in the ignition all the time in the hope it'll be gone when I get back. It's not worked so far. I guess people just know a pile of poo when they see it.

i went on holiday for a week, locked the wheel with a disk lock and locked the key for that under the seat. came back to find i'd left the ignition key hanging out of the seat lock
