Default Is your boss evil?

Grumpy Tim time:-

Mine must be.

I have been cutting code for over 30 years.

Firstly at the tender age of 18 I was introduced APL and writing out coding sheets for data input to type up, print out, I would correct and then get them to try and compile, correct, debug, and finally run.

Since then I learned Basic/Fortran/Pascal Z80, 6502, 6509, 68000, VAX assembly languages -> C -> Java and finally C#

Additionally I leaned javascript, PHP. and stuff like Oracle development tools ie forms from 2.5,3,4.5, 6 etc.

Sorry to be geeky, but as the one of the few genuine programmers my company still employs. I get to do all sorts of "interesting" read difficult projects. To mess up my quite life, somebody decides to commission an app without reference to the IT dept. Wrote in house by a bodging amateur. Suddenly the corporate people like the app but need the scope extending to fit a global rather than national requirement. Guess who has to pick up the bodged code as the student who hacked it has left. Yup, yours truly.

Totally undocumented, unstructured. unsupportable and if that was not bad enough. in bloody ASP. So just been out and bought a book. God this is so primitive and poorly written. (Application variables stored in cookies instead of sessions etc.)

I don't know whether to start from scratch using the existing app as a functional prototype. or try to fix it working with what I have.

Yup my boss is evil. He leaves me alone to get on with things. But occasionally uses tricks like this to wind me up.

Start from scratch and use the existing (cr)app purely as a feature list.

My boss comes across as in power and everything.... but he is actually a nice guy and s1ags the company off as much as we do for all the policies and lack of support they give staff.

If i've got a problem i can go to him, however don't see him that much tho as he sits he his office about 50 yards (if that) from my department's pod, and sends us emails, or calls us on the internal phone system with work he needs doing. Only see him when i need him for stuff.
