Not a happy chappy. My SV doesn't like ignition fuses.

I've not had the best start with my SV. It's a 2003 Curvey, but ever since day one (saturday 19th) it's been blowing the ignition fuse randomly on starting.

It's just came back from a week long stint back at Streetbike where I bought it from, and they say it did blow the fuse a few times while it was there, but they didn't really see much wrong. The most apparent cause apparently was the starter switch, as whenever you touched this, the fuse would blow and of course then no engine starting. They also apparently checked the starter motor, all the earth points, the solenoid and various other bits.

Got it back at 5:30pm today, all seemed fine, happy me. Went out for an hour or two, then came back home and pulled up by my garage and turned the engine off.

As i'm lazy I went to start the engine to get it into the garage when i'd got my helmet and jacket off. But click, as I pressed the starter I heard the fuse go. Absolutely gutted I took off the side panels and removed the seat to get at the fuses, and sure enough - a nice blown use. I tried two of the spares and the same happened again.

I'm SO gutted, i'm completely out of love with my very first bike just a week or so after picking it up. It is amazing when you can get the git started, but i'm scared to go on a ride out somewhere as I might get stranded.
I'll have to tell them to come get it AGAIN tomorrow.

Has anybody had this before? Any ideas anybody?

Its quite common for the SV's wiring loom to rub on the frame in several places which then causes a short and blows the fuses. I suspect this is what is causing your problem. A few places to check.

1. Wires around the headstock
2. Have a look around under the tank / airbox
3. Undo the riders seat bolts, particularly the left hand ( gear change ) side one.
4. Have a look around under the rear plastics and make sure the loom isnt running on the rear subframe.

My other halfs K5 starter blowing fuses and not starting. I had a good look around and eventually I found the positive lead on the battery was loose and since I tightened that up its been fine ever since so this also might be worth having a check for on your bike.

seems interesting. I'll have to have a look. So i'm looking for places where the insulation may have completely worn off?

Yep you got it.

My SV was around the headstock and also under the rear plastics. So it might be more than one place.

Update-

Bike went back in on Thursday, and they gave me a new FZ6 to knock about on.
Streetbike called today and said it was ready, and they did actually find a fault!! Turns out fizzwheel was not far off, it was an alarm cable shorting on the frame.

So, all fixed it would seem. Plus they fitted my extenda fenda, hugger and rad guard while it was in.

So hopefully I can begin my SV'ing properly now!

that happened to me my alarm wires were rubbing so out came the insulating tape and i cover all the wires in sight with about 6 layers of insulating tape and not had any problems since!
