Default Oh Bug*er

I made a half hearted New Years Resolution not to buy any more bikes until I'd at least sold some of the ones I already own - well, that lasted right up until I bought a ZX7R this afternoon.

1 day - is it a record?

A ZX-7R?!?! Awesome!! Is it for doing up? Or is it in sound condition? Pictures Lozzo, pictures!!!!!!

Am I right in recalling that the ZX-7RR's (the homoglation specials) had gear driven cams? I was trying to think the other day what bikes, apart from honda VFR's (not the 800's) had gear driven cams, and that was the only bike that sprung to mind.

Wow, ZX-7R. reminds me of Chris Walker and BSB in the late 90's

Lovely bikes, is it in good condition or does it need a revamp?

It needs a revamp, most definitely.

Last time I saw it there was a crowd of people trying to repair the ignition switch after an attempted theft. It was propped up against a fence at Snetterton looking rather sorry for itself. Since then it's been laid up for about 4 years. It's battered but complete and running with multi-coloured bodywork.

I'm planning on getting it safe, then taking it out for a trackday or two to see if I get on with it. If I do then I'll lob race bodywork on, sell the road bits and sell my CBR600 trackbike. If I don't like it then it'll get tidied up and fully serviced, then sold and I'll keep my CBR6.

As soon as I have it back at home I'll take some piccies. I'm collecting it from Essex on Sunday.

They make great track bikes, especially if you are a front end rider but the worst bit has always been those Tokico 6-pots.

See my previous post regarding condition.

The original 1999 VFR800i had gear driven cams, it was only when they brought out the 800i V-tec that camchains made a return.

As far as I'm aware the ZX-7RR had a camchain the same as the normal road bike did. I used to work on the Slick Bass tuned Team UKRM ZX-7RR endurance racer and that engine certainly ran a camchain. There wasn't a huge amount of difference between a 7R and a 7RR tbh. Adjustable swingarm pivot, slightly different forks, some minor engine mods, flatslide carbs etc - nothing drastic really.

I thought so too.

The first thing that will be changed if I keep it will be the front calipers. I've already put my name to a set of 4-pot Nissins that I think may fit and do the job, and there are a set of 4-pot Tokico SRAD calipers I can access at any time too.

I'm not known for riding the front hard, but I've ridden a few 7Rs on the road and one on track and loved the stability - the front end really is about the best for a standard bike that I've ever known. They are heavy and slow to turn in though.

I'm lucky that my housemate is a huge fan of the ZX7R and is currently rebuilding a crashed one into a special for the road (this is his third one). He has a wealth of knowledge about them and knows the bikes inside out.

Sounds like you have the right chap there to ask for help and guidance when needed.

I agree that the ZX7R has the best front end ever, no other bike matches it. The common mod of jacking the rear up is a good one on the 7's. There is also a lot of knowledge and products out there too, thanks to Kawasaki keeping the bike racing for as long as possible. I found the 7 to be ridiculously heavy, you'll understand what I mean when you start stripping it for the track.

I've been shunting housie's in and out of the garage during this rebuild, it is a heavy old lump, I know. I've ridden a fair few on the road so know roughly what to expect.
