Default Bike Parking Charges

Hello nice Soho peeps

I know some of you aint that bothered by the bike parking scheme thats recently been introduced but i'm sure you'll all be surprised to hear that i'm not happy about it. What a shock eh?

Anyhoo i'm not the only and recently in the bike bay near me i came across a notice from a chap calling himself RedRider. See attached.

He went on to say this to my email to him....

Obviously you can pick and choose the reasons and my alternative solutions may not be to your liking. The key thing is trying to get some opposition to these charges.

I also asked for the following info from Westminster City Council using the Freedom of Information facility.
Again hopefully if they are bombarded for information they will have second thoughts and they will also have to reveal the true figures involved in their plan.
Let me know what they tell you.

I asked for the following

"In your flyers advertising the new motorcycle charges you make several statements which I shall be pleased if you would clarify 1,000 extra spaces have been created. - where have these been created and since when?
How much have the improvements cost and how much is expected to be raised in fees?
How many new spaces are planned to be introduced in the next 6 months and where?
If the fees are there to pay for the past improvements why are the charges on going and not for a limited period?
I look forward to receiving the information in due course. "

Any feed back you get would be gratefully received.

Thanks

He'd even organised a ride for last friday that to be honest was very poorly attended but i guess that was cos it was during the day and not very well publicised.

however in principle i agree with what he's doing and i think anyone who is like indd could make the small effort of writting to the money grabbers and lodging your objection to the scheme, after all that what the 6 month "consultation" period of its implementation is for.

i have a lot more info from this guy that i'll happily PM or email to anyone who wants it.

My major objection to this scheme, apart from it being yet another stealth tax on us is that am expected to pay to park where i have been parking fro free up to now...yet they have done nothing to improve that particular bay, so what exactly am i paying for???? And how is it fair?

Discuss...

So who in the council do I e-mail? Or does it have to be a letter to the person above in the photo?

I had to go to the other end of Oxford Street last night.

Ended up trying to time it so that I would miss the 6:30 end of parking charging.

In the end, the bay I was aiming for was full so I ended up behind the Odeon at Marble Arch in a car space all to my own.

So can I suggest this as a means of protest.

After 6:30, if you are in Westminster, park square in the middle of a car space, EVEN if there is an empy bike bay next to it.

Make it inconvenient for ALL people parking and it may add to the pressure.

Take a photo of you bike parked, as I bet someone will try to move it and park a car there.

You'll have to explain this to me like I'm a 5 year old. The only time I've parked a bike in London is in Soho with you lot.

Are we expected to pay for parking in a motorbike bay? If so how?

Can you put up a link up or a letter that we can just put our names on and e-mail the relevant person?

yes dude, as of a couple of weeks ago a majority of Westminsters bike bays have become chargeable. You have to pay by phone or text and must register with them before hand to do so.

Its £1.50 and for that you get to park in any of the bays in that section of Westminster (ormaybe any of the bays, i'm not 100% on that bit) and if you're lucky you will find one of the very few bays that have a bar on the pavment side that you can chain you bike to. If like the 95% of the rest of us you dont find one of these you still pay for the priveledge of parking next to some a-hole who thinks its accpetable to wedge his scooter against your bike and scratch it in up the process.

Now would you like some jelly?

HTH.

I believe it has to be a post thing so i'll put the letter up a bit later on and you can adjust it as you see fit and send i to the man in charge.

I wouldnt mind paying, if something to chain my bike to was provided...like a nice huge ground anchor.

What do you display as proof of payment? A ticket can be easily stolen, right?
