Default Curvy engine won't start, electrical buzz.

Hi, my son has a SV650SY (2000 model) and for unknown reason it will not start.

He last road the bike on 20th July and has since then has kept it on an Optimate in his garage. The battery seems fine, all the lights work on the dash and the starter motor starts to engage. But, after one quick fire from one of the cylinders (exhaust noise) the bike suddenly stars a sharp electrical buzzing noise. This noise is similar to a battery drill when it is no longer drilling/screwing whilst the motor is still running.

Could it be due to the starter motor being broken?

I have never had any engine or starting problems on my SK4, other than running out of petrol (thank you Dangerous Dave), so I have no idea where to start. Please any of you mechanical buffs out there can you pass on some advice.

Thank you Geoff

Just because the optimate says the batteries OK it might not be. You're describing classic flat battery syndrome, i.e. lights work, but bike buzzes when you try and start it.

First thing I'd do is put a voltmeter across the battery and measure the voltage. If you do a search there should be some more detailed explanations as to what to do. I wont describe it as I'm not that technically minded.

Also the other thing to do if its been stood for ages, is pop the tank off and drain all the fuel out of it and fill with fresh, you might want to think about taking the carbs off and cleaning those out to as unleaded "goes off" and it can leave behind a gummy residue which gums up the works.

Fuel should be fine after only a month.Does sound like a battery problem or a loose connection.Id check the battery connections and the earthing.

Hi Geoff, ran out of fuel recently???

As suggested check the battery first, I can't see it being the fuel if the bike has run well only a month ago. Let us know your findings mate...

Is your son based in Wiltshire too?

Hi all, well my sons SV650SY is almost fixed. The SV is running on one cylinder now, and you guys were right the battery was not as charged as the Optimate indicated. How can you tell which cylinder is not firing?

Hi Dave, no I haven't run out of petrol since we last met. My son lives near Wroughton in Wiltshire, I am going over later to pass on any information I gather from all of you.

I got your PM, are you sure that is a very kind offer and I already owe you a pint for helping me out last time.

P.S. Are you bringing your Beasty, haven't stopped yapping on about it to my son.

Geoff

Spit on the front downpipe, if the bit doesnt evaporate off, its the front pot, if it does then its the back pot.

Well I believe the scientific approach above should answer your first question.

I know it well, my old man was stationed there when the RAF still had it.

No probs, I am coming down to see the folks on Monday anyway. They don't live too far from Wroughton, I'll leave earlier and pop by and have a look on the way.

Yes, it will be her first long run as a SV800S and I am looking forward to catching out a few of the locals.
