Default Vista wireless network :( :( :(

I'm trying to set up my new laptop to access the wireless router. It is an identical laptop to the one I am typing on! But I still can't get it working.
It finds my wireless network but doesn't ask for the WEP code, it just says: "Windows cannot connect to Home"

Anything obvious I could check?

Hmmm...hard to help without physically being there but I'll have a bash.

Open up 'Network and Sharing Centre', then click on 'Manage Wireless Networks' (to the left of the screen).

This should open up a new window. In this window should be the connection (Think your's will be called "Home")

Double click this and it should open up another window with a security tab. You can put the WEP code into there.

Hope this helps a little bit, and if it doesn't - I can't do any better sorry!

I tried installing the network manually (putting in the WEP code) but the same thing happens

Windows firewall is turned off and so is the anti-virus program. I've tried turning off the WEP encryption but still no joy

Why thank you...

Vista is still in those early rubbishy stages where sometimes it works lovely, and other times it can be a complete bitch. If you ain't got a lot of time to fiddle and trall forums looking for a answers I would stick with XP. I suspect it would be a driver issue, so got to the wireless card vendor and look up there drivers. Even if Vista says you have the right version install this one anyway. If not you wireless card, then the motherboard drivers.

Make sure network name is the same on the laptop as on the router. IP should be auto on laptop.
Use Wpa2 security and make sure the key on both are the same.
Set it up for home, private use on the laptop.
One not so obvious... Is the router 802.11G wireless or 802.11N wireless. It's usually G.
Thats all I can help with at the mo.

Just thought....set up the router using wired cable and make notes on all wireless setting, so that you can copy what you need for the laptop.
