Default Why do we ride our bikes?

Found this while reading a business managment book

Its a statement of the finding of a Polish psychologist on what makes people feel good

"The types of activity which people all over the world consistently report as most rewarding - that is, which make them feel best - involve a clear objective, a need for concentration so intense that no attention is left over, a lack of interruptions and distractions, clear and immediate feedback on progress towards the objective, and a sense of challenge - the sense that ones skills are adequate, but only adequate, to cope with the task in hand."

Pretty much coves it all for me

Because it's cheaper, more fun and quicker than driving a Renault Espace to work on the M58, M6, M62, M602 and Manchester's city centre roads!

Oh and because I can!

Because we would look silly just pushing them around

I ride my bike because: I dont like using public transport (too costly, too slow) and because I dont have a car or car lisence. If the journey isnt that long, I'll walk.

I also like to ride to take my mind off things, to ride just for ridings sake (its quite technical, dont you all think? I like that, technical stuff, things you have to analyse and think about in order to get better, fun) and also, I love to ride with my dad.

Oh, and now, I really really love riding with 100 or so other people from the best biking community in the world. SV650.org's Annual Rideouts!

Some spend more time cleaning and polishing than riding. What does that make them?

I would pretty much say it is an escape from everything. Nothing else matters when youre on the bike.

In the words of Billie Piper "Because we want to! Because we want to!"

I ride my bike because:
It goes fast(ish).
It's loud(ish).

I like the way that when I get on a bike, I could be anyone. It's almost like adopting a new persona. Who's behind the black visor? Could be anyone from another persons perspective. I like that about bikes (or more accurately bike clothing but you get the link).

Since I was 3 I loved bikes and was fascinated by how cool the riders looked, to be in control of a machine that takes skill, courage and bravery sometimes to ride and ride well. I guess that's part of the appeal for me. Although I never felt all that cool on my old GS125!

It also feels nice to be part of a group. Bikers seem to stick together (although some threads here would suggest otherwise). I like feeling like a part of something. Something that is more than the sum of it's parts.

Because I can't drink gin every hour of every day (and god knows, I've tried) so I have to do something to fill the sober hours.
