Hi not sure if this is the right place for this thread but..
I'm after a decent tap and die set for threading screws etc. and was wondering if anyone had a good set they could recommend? Ideally after a metric kit ranging anything from say 6 to 25mm. Many thanks, Si edit, obviously goot = good. d'oh. |

Like with all tools, avoid cheap "far eastern" stuff, they tend not to be very nice and you'll end up buying again. If you get good stuff it'll last years of occasional use. Go for High Speed Steel (HSS) in preference.
I'd suggest our old friend/enemy fleabay, something like this picked at a quick glance seems the right sort of parish. Teng stuff is pretty decent. That set covers most sizes you're likely to want. Bear in mind you'll need tapping drills too (to suit the sizes), and the taps there are probably taper (or first), and if you wanted to do blind holes you'd need second or plug taps, but I suggest get them separately if you do need them. Easy way to remember tapping drill sizes for metric coarse is the nominal thread size minus the pitch, so M6x1 use 5.0mm drill, M8x1.25 use 6.8mm drill etc.

Cheers embee for the advice, like you guessed though it's blind holes i need to do as well so i'd need some add-ons with that set. Gonna go for a Draper one i think unless you or anyone else has some horry stories about them?
Managed to break a 6mm Bosch drill bit the other day in a hand drill of all things, couldn't beleive it just snapped so easily! |

Draper are usually respectable stuff, certainly a safer bet than unbranded.
Have you looked in Halfords? Their pro range tools get very good reports from those who've used them? Don't know what they do in the way of taps/dies? Some of the on-line tool shops would be worth checking, I guess Sealey/Draoer/Clarke etc all source from teh same sort of places. Here is one, another

I have been using my old Kamasa tap and die set for years and never had any issues with it. 25mm threads are very unusual, I'd get a set that ran to about 10mm in varying thread pitches and then buy single items if I needed anything bigger or more specific.
