took me an hour to get to Halfords and back because of traffic in york & all the tourists coming to look at the river Ouse which has flooded in the centre of town but out of town, is well swollen & nearly breaching into the adjacent fields... raining for a change.
Anyway, sump bolt out, oil came out over a 15 minute period with a bit of rocking and starting the engine for a 3 second blast to squeeze any remaining bits of oil in the engine itself. Took about an hour to get the oil filter off because padgetts Suzuki didn't have any filter removal tools = "Just use a screw driver mate" - straight from Suzuki's own workshop service manual I'm guessing? Finally got the screwdriver through it without damaging anything, then used an old belt as a kind of strap wrench. Bit of oil on the rubber gasket on the new filter, screwed it on then used the belt to tighten 2 turns. Sump bolt back in and started topping it up with oil. I filled it with new (Castrol "racing") oil upto the full line (with bike vertical) and then started it up - all the oil disappeared and sucked up inside the engine. Turned it off and saw the oil level had dropped again so topped it up a bit more. Now, when the engine is off & the bike is vertical, the oil level is about 2mm above the full mark, but it's not completely above the glass window. When the engine is on, the oil level drops right down the the bottom marker on the glass window. I can't remember if this is normal so could anyone confirm if I need to do anything else? Thanks in advance!

Yeah - that's normal. Too much oil can be a bad thing (neutral selection amongst others) - if you have a syringe you can pull a bit out through the filler cap if it bothers you.

Leave your engine til its fully coild to see where it settles. don't put anymore in. It won't do much harm, I've accidently overfilled mine once..she burnt it off. When you change the oil, then turn it on, it goes round the engine and settles round various parts etc, so doesn't give you an acurate reading. Always check your oil when the engines cold or slightly warm...a more accurate reading. Not hot after a long time on idle etc, it gets more fluid and hides ![]() p.s well done on the oil change though..I have two girly hands and can't usually get the sump bolts to budge...which is why i always ask nice YCs to help ![]()

![]() Use one of them to turn the sump bolt, instead of just relying on your girly hands! |

easy dizzee!
i read on here someone "turned" their engine over a few times during an oil change to let any trapped oil in the engine run out. Literally, I turned the engine on, looked down and saw oil dropping out of the sump and turned it off in about 2-3 seconds. Doubt it'll do that much damage ![]() I properly overfilled it back in may and spent about 2 hours trying to get it back to the right level - haven't had any trouble since. Just wondered if 2mm over the line will cause any problems but it should be right. Thanks again! ![]() ![]()

Yup, they probably turned it by hand. But you're right 2-3 seconds tops probably won't do too much harm. So long as you didn't hear any strange noises.

lol, i didn't mean that literally, I'm not very good with spanners etc in other words ![]() Ah, now ya see, I may be able to help with how to swap a cylinder head or two, I have been the apprentice on that job ![]() I'd never heard of turning the motor 'by hand' for that one.....just sent a shiver...being one that has accidently starved the front cylinder of oil ![]()

When there is no oil in the engine, dont turn it over. A little bit of old oil left in the engine wont do any harm. I tend to let all the oil drain out over a 30 minute period; after the oil has drained form the sump plug, I take off the filter and let the rest of that drain out. Then just leave it to stand for the final drips.
If you have excess oil and no syringe, then I suppose you can just undo the filter and let it drip out, or even undo the clutch cover and let it run out through there; perhaps drain out 100 ml and then see where your at. Matt |

The engine must never be run without oil in it - even briefly. The big ends, (plain bearings), for instance are under extreme stress and rely on oil pressure to stop metal to metal contact. It's pointless anyway, without stripping the engine you'll always have a bit left in there anyway and the tiny amount you'll get out by that process will be a fraction of the remains.

+1 mr squid.
You'll also flush all the oil out of the crank and galleries meaning an extra few seconds of damage when you first start it. F###in silly idea IMO
