Default Cleaning a Smelly Jacket

One of my jackets that I've had for well over 2 years, (and used a lot!) is starting to smell...

What's the best method for cleaning them? And what should I avoid using?

I just hang it outside on a dry, windy day once in a while.

Or you can get it from millets, blacks or any camping shop and its normally a little cheaper than geting it from a bike shop to.

If your going to put it in the machine do it a delicates / wool wash and take the armour out of it and zip up all the pockets to.

Once you've washed it you'll need to reproof it or it'll leak again Nikwax do a product that'll do this.

If you dont want to machine wash it, run the bath with some tepid water and use baby shampoo on it to get it clean.

Again you'll need to reproof it otherwise it'll leak and dont use normal washing powder / detergent its to harsh on the fabric.

If it's that bad, hit it with a hammer until it stops trying to crawl away on its own...

... then buy a new jacket.

Sorry - am I not helping?

The nikwax waterproofing stuff is like waterproofing voodoo, so after you wash it get some of that on it. Fantastic stuff. TX.direct I think it might be called?

BEFORE you put ANY textile waterproof membraned jacket/trousers in the washing machine , put the machine on a good rinse and spin , this will help remove any washing powder or detergent in the machine from previous washes . Waterproof stuff like Gore-Tex , Hipora , Dry-Way do not respond well to washing powder and it can stop them working effectively . I also pop the drawer out of my machine and rinse that under the tap too .
