Problem removing oil filter.

Hello all started serviceing my bike today and when it came to takeing the oil filter off i had one of these borrowed off a mate http://www.screwfix.com/prods/48077/...-Filter-Wrench but would not grip the filter properly.So i wraped a belt around it and turned it in the direction of anti clockwise but it just would not move so i tryed the screwdriver through the filter idea but it just broke through the tin. I used a massive (it was massive) wrench. Gripped it tightly and pulled up. Very easy but I did have about a foot of leverage.

I generally use the proper tool but you can use those 'boa' tools from b and q (and probably other places). Apparently your oil filter should be hand tight. I'm dreading taking mine off becuase the front wheel smashed it in the crash so it had to be overtightened to stop leakage.

I have both chain & strap type filter removers, but I only ever need to use them where access to get hold of the filter is restricted. Normally just get hold of the bugger and turn it.

Who the hell fitted your filter if it is that tight that the screwdriver method just rips the filter

People always over tighten them. You only realy need to do them up (firmly) by hand

If your filter is on that tight then it means a gorilla has put it on. I've always been taught to just smear the seal with a little oil or grease and then hand tighten ONLY as hard as I could. Never had a loose filter on car, bike or ships generators filter EVER.
I've come across the odd filter which has been overtighted, but I've not resorted to the screwdriver method yet.
If the filter is in good enough shape go to your nearest autoshop and get
a filter wrench like this one

Then you can use a long bar and get the leverage you need. The chain wrench will just destroy the filter.

If not then a large slitson wrench might be your last option

From the sound of things you have grollied (technical term) the filter to the extent that nothing will grip the can because there is nothing left.

Only one solution, a pair of stiltstons on the rolled edge. Put them on the right way round so they bite it as you heave

Yes or just start brutalising it with a big punch. I have a bit of inch bar for just such an occasion. Just don't hit the engine cases.

A wee tip for reference.

Sometimes it helps to gently tighten first. We do this often on our trucks, particularly on hydraulic fittings. It helps to free the thread.

Our trucks get covered in all kinds of nasty stuff and work in all weather and conditions. If i have any hydraulic hoses or adaptors to remove i generally put the spanner on turn clockwise a little, then anti-clockwise. Surprising how often it works.
