Default Absolutely Chuffed: The Men Who Built a Steam Engine

Last night's TV highlight, without a doubt. Over a few beers 20 years ago a group of men decide, as you do, that it's a terrible shame that none of the 1948-1949 A1 steam engines survived. Then they wondered if you could build one. Fair enough, we've all decided we could build a Saturn V rocket or similar, but they actually did it. 20 years and £3M to do it, but good on them!

Website here

BBC's iplayer for the program here

Bloomin Iplayer has been playing up for me this morning. Been trying to get that to run so I can watch it.

Fascinating stuff. Cheers for the linkage

Interesting. But why bother. Sorry don't get big boys with full size train sets. As a lifelong hater of trains I would prefer all track ripped up to provide routes to lay tarmac on for me to ride at stupid speed.

Cant agree with that. There is something captivating about a steam engine.Mabbe its the fact that so much of the mechanicals are exposed,or the noises but its so much more involving than a modern car.

Why not ? Theres no examples of the type that made it through to preservation. So surely rebuilding one from scratch is not only a huge project but it allows future generations to see and learn about our history ?

Why ? If we had a hafl deent railway infrastructure surely alot of that freight thats on artics on the roads could go by rail. Thus freeing up the roads for bikes. Also all those holiday makers that clog up the M5 on Summer weekends might also go by rail to... but the infrastructure isnt there anymore is it...

I used to love going to the preserved railways near me when I was a kid with my dad. Completely different experience to modern rail transport

That's cool. Seems that it might have been money better spent on a restoration rather than a copy, but it's still cool.

There werent any A1 locos left to restore they all got scrapped before the preservation mania in the 60's took off...

The only way to bring that back was to start again from the orginal drawings.
