what setting should a mutimeter be on to check a battery

volts..amps.. current, continuety, resistance ... thats why its a Multi Meter..

Also remember volts are both AC and DC. As stated above you need a 0-20 dc scale for you battery. But if you are checking your alternator output into your R/R then you would need an AC scale of about 0-100v.

When measuring current, you need to place it in series within the circuit not parallel. so please don't use it for any heavy loads like "I wonder what load my starter draws" etc.
