sounds like the good old Regulator/rectifier to me. Do a search there is plenty of info on here about them as they are prone to fail.

Sounds very much like the reg/rec to me aswell - there is a post by sid squid on this forum (you may have to do a search) about how to check if the reg/rec is blown using a multimeter attached to your battery!
Don't dispair or get too worried - Its a common fault with SV's - mine blew at about 25,000 miles. I got a new one from suzuki which looked like a differant design, so hopefully better heat dissipation (which, as far as I understand, is a major reason why the reg/rec fails). In 8000 miles, I've had no problems. I use my bike every day almost ![]() To find the regulator/rectifier, you need to take the seat unit plastics off and it'll be on the right hand side (as you sit on the bike) or, if you prefer, the side that the sidestand isnt on ![]() Matt Last edited by Alpinestarhero; 26-12-08 at 08:31 PM. |

i'm going to produce a printout of results.
My bike is about to hit 8k. Can someone tell me what revs you have to rev the bike to test the Rec/Reg so i can predict when mine is going to give up the ghost. If i test it every 1k then i should be able to predict it going and thus saving a battery? |

Output should be 15.5v @ 5000rpm for a carb model, not sure on the FI ones though.
Don't think you'll see it coming though, they just stop working and that's yer lot. |

Aye sounds like the Reg/Rec, I must be the only person that still has had no problems and the originals fitted to both my '99 and '00 SV's.

I take it they breakdown due to excessive heat. So surely it would be a gradual breakdown. It wouldn't be a case of the voltage staying the same and then it dropping off, surely you should see it happening over time. |
