Default Might be moving to Oldham near Manchester

As per title, I might be moving 'oop North' for work shortly. I will be working in Oldham. At least for the first 6 months I want to keep my place in south wales and either rent a room in a shared house/buy a small studio apartment just as somewhere to sleep in during the week really. Any recommendations on areas to check out/avoid? Bearing in mind I'll almost certainly be parking my bike on the road up there, at least to begin with. Anything I should really see/do there or roads I must ride whilst I'm up in that neck of the woods?

Oh yes, any recommendations on a place for SV servicing/repairs etc. up there? I normally do 90% of the work myself, but to begin with at least will have a rather limited set of tools up there.

Recommend you avoid Oldham, Middleton, Failsworth, Ashton under Lyne. Staly has one or two interesting residents. Advantages, cheap, good roads out. Disadvatages. You will never leave, they will not let you. Once you become local, you know the score.

Major disadvantage :- JW Lees, Joseph Holts is an acquired taste. Those you acquire it, also acquire enormous noses with veins mapping out Manchester in exact detail

Yeah don't live in Oldham! There's a lot of scummy areas around Manchester (Liverpool for example) so pick wisely.

Don't know who you could mean Mr Wilky...

Yep, I agree with Tim there. Staly's pretty good. Nice roads, some decent pubs and definately not as rough as Ashton or Oldham.

Servicing and repairs - Road and Racing in Hyde if you want it done by a dealer, or Mr Pigs in Manchester otherwise.

hi cerijc, all good advice above. i live in mossley (which everyone else has seemed to of forgotten) which borders olham, never had any trouble and plenty of apartments to choose from, some with secure parking. a little further away is greenfield, uppermill but prices do go up. let me know when you come up and i'll show you around.
as for servicing i deal with nobody else but allbikes suzuki, rochdale.
what line of work you in?

Amanda, just had mine serviced at Mr Pigs for the first time , and it won't be the last either. Ace service.

And a good hint -keep the pix of your bike up to date good evidence of it's condition if you have to claim on insurance
