Hi,
looking at getting my frame either painted or powder coated black to match my new wheels and fit in with the new look. what would be better. i can get it painted cheap by a friend in a proper low bake oven, but would it be worth spending the extra for powder coating? also what prep work is required for both? i.e. removing the old powder. cheers dan |

Well the frame will be blasted before it is powder coated, though I would go for that myself rather then painting its going to last better.
Though which frame is this your planing on doing, just so we are clear? |

get it powder coated. and get it resistant to petrol just in case. i made the mistake of not getting petrol resistance coating and petrol spilled over the frame and marked it.

I say powdercoat too- it's a lovely finish and extremely tough if applied well. The only downside is that if you do manage to damage it, you've got trouble- assuming it has a clearcoat, water can get underneath that through even minor scratches and cause the clearcoat to lift off and bubble. My rear wheel had this- the wheel got clattered by the chain when it broke, and though the damage was actually pretty minimal that winter the clear layer started to lift, and got dirt under it, and generally went horrible. So I ended up peeling it off and just leaving the colour coat underneath.
That's a bit of an extreme example, paint would have been ruined by the damage too, but you see this sometimes around minor impact or tool marks as well. Whereas paint, when you damage it, you can just touch up easily.
