ABOLISH WESTMINSTER PARKING CHARGE SAYS MRA

Westminster City Council’s parking charges for motorcycles run contrary to the Government’s intention to make motorcycling more mainstream, and to the Mayor of London’s plans to make London more motorcycle-friendly, according to the RMI Motorcycle Retailers Association (MRA)

Westminster City Council have been charging motorcyclists to park in Westminster since 4 August 2008. A day permits costs £1.50, while an annual permit costs £150. Weekly, monthly, and quarterly permits are also available.

The charge is seen to be at odds with both national and regional Government policy on motorcycling, and many in the motorcycle sector would like to see Westminster’s charges abolished.

MRA Chairman Martin Marshall commented: ‘At a time when London Mayor Boris Johnson is opening up bus lanes to powered two wheelers (PTWs) and more and more people are turning to motorcycles and scooters, increased amounts of free parking should be provided, so it would be appropriate to drop this charging regime.’

Marshall continues: ‘Motorcycles and scooters provide the ideal solution for commuters seeking a genuine door-to-door solution. In fact, where public transport does not serve their needs and cycling is not an option, bikes provide a practical alternative for those seeking personal mobility.’

Marshall adds: ‘These charges were introduced without proper consultation, in effect being forced upon users without prior notification, and now being said to be in a trial period. The MRA are lobbying Westminster City Council for the charges to be removed.’

Must confess, as it doesn't affect me I not all that fussed, but for those that it does, maybe something to hope for, or action to take?

Effects me and its interesting to see its not the usual MAG or BMF thats saying this but the guys who give lots of tax money to Govt fopr the bikes they sell. Maybe now Govt will listen....sorry wait i know that wont happen.

Maybe now Boris will buy a moped and change the charge

I forget how Boris relates to all of this? Was it all Ken's doing and Boris has so far gone along with it, or was he Mayor before this was introduced?

This is nothing to do with either Boris or Ken. It's Westminster Council.

Its purely a Westminster decision, nothing to do with Boris/TfL

I went to one demo and had a bit of fun riding round Regent Street, making a lot of noise and holding up the traffic, a certain web-slinging superhero was supposed to also be there.

Their next demo is the 14th, whic clashes with the Ace Toy Run.

And it affects more people than you think - I park for free near Liverpool St, but if T and I decide we want to eat out directly after work, we have to go outside of Westminster, due to me refusing to pay £1.50 for about an hours parking, when I can park in Camden etc for free.

Well we should "advise" Boris that his brilliant plan to encourage more motrbikes by virtue of opening up the bus lanes to PTWs is being scuppered by those evil doers at Westminster who are going out their way to discourage bikes and see what he says then.
