Default Insurance Offer On The Duke

As you may know, our 996 was knocked over on Saturday after some myopic old idiot reversed into her. Yesterday an independant assessor came to look at the damage, and Pete has just phoned me from work to say he's had an offer from Footman James.

£4,050 for the bike.

We can buy her back for £1,215

That would leave us £2,835 to carry out the repairs ourselves. Less than the estimate, but we could certainly do the important things first, and leave some of the more cosmetic stuff until we'd got enough cash.

What do you think? Does the offer sound reasonable to you?

Hmm. I'd push for 4,500 for the bike, certainly closer to that than you've been offered, and get the price for the bike a bit lower. Or say you'll accept the price to buy her back, on the condition you get a couple hundred quid more for the bike in the first place.

Have they made the offer knowing the extra things you and pete discovered- broken fairing mount and rad, iirc?

never take the first offer, push a bit more they will try to tempt you with the amount but refuse and they will add more, sometimes only a couple of hundred quid but well worth it.

i wouldnt bother buying it back though because it will show as a catagory write off on the hpi and becomes harder to sell. not only that when i did that i payed full amount for insurance but if anything happenes they will only pay 1/3 of the price of the bike.

More importantly how do you feel about it?

As some others have said holding out for more is a good idea. Its almost the unwritten rule I managed to get an extra £2339 out of my insurance company when I disputed. But thats cos they are disputed and valued my S reg Mini Cooper Sportspack as a J reg Mini Cooper!!!

On a side note I just did a quote for that 848 I have in mind for next year
£2099!!! I nearly pooped my pants then I cried a little inside.

Not necessarily. Quite a few commented on the original thread stating otherwise.. you just have to ask the right questions

Well obviously, otherwise they wouldn't write it off.

Then no, if you expect to spend more than you'll get putting it back to how it was. That means you have not received restitution from the party at fault so hold out for a full repair, say you will not accept a write off.

That said, I'd be flabbergasted if you couldn't repair this good enough off ebay & make a nice little earner on it of at least £1,800. This will be required to make up for the fact it will be registered.

I'd be inclined to get a bit of ebay rumaging done, and also i'm sure if you ask the right peeps on the Duc forum there'd be folks that would have some of the spares you need kicking about
