Default Tax Return online - I may be too late.

After getting a reminder to fill in my online tax return bt the 31st I thought I'd saunter on to their website and make a relaxed start. Unfortunately to do this you need a pin which you need to register for and then wait for by mail, doh!

They never mentioned this in the reminder, they never said register by the 21st of January to file online by the 31st, the swines will no doubt fine me now too, and I thought I was so prepared starting a few days before what I thought was the original deadline....

Fingers crossed the government admin system, followed by Royal mail and Dutch mail has it in my letterbox by Friday, but somehow I doubt it.

You live and learn.

Doh.

Damn, they mention the seven days for a pin in the small print on the back of the reminder, that's false advertising I say, I'll have them up infront of the following:

And I reckon it's so they can get as many 100GBP fines as possible, the scheming little....

I used to use Taxcalc to do my return before they sorted out the online self assessment thing (and then take the paperwork along to the local tax office around 3pm on the 31st. Go me, Mr Organised!)

If you're in a hurry, you should be able to download a copy, process it and bung it in the post well before the deadline.

There was an item on't wireless about the on-line PIN delay thing at the weekend.

Can't remember the exact details but there was a work-round discussed. Best thing is to phone your local HMRC office pronto and ask, could save you a hundred squiddlies.

The postal version had to be completed by the end of October, hence why I'm having to do the online one.....

I'll give it a go, anything is worth a try.

Sorry Tim but it could get worse! For example if you owe any tax for 07/08 and its not paid up bydeadline they may fine you another £100! That said you can down load a printed copy of SA103 (IIRC) and manually workout your liability and pay it into your account thus saving a possible extra £100 and have the figures ready for your onloine return.

I'm pretty sure I don't owe any, but I'll check just in case.

This from the bloke who says in Gr33k's emigration thread that he MUST come back to UK - I'd go as far as possible in the other direction.

The system isn't working properly anyway. I'd just mention that you'd had 'problems'
