Default Knackered thread.

Ive managed to thread a part on my Trottle Bodies. Just wondering what the easy fixes are?

Can a self tapper be used, its soft ali as I found out when i did it...

Or helicoil the best/only way?

Sigh. Hope 1 tight and one not so tight bolt can hold it in place for the next ride back home!

I guess it depends on location and how tight the bolt has to be. On something vital, i would get it helicoiled. Is it possible to drill it and tap a larger thread?

There is also the putty metal stuff, supposedly you can fill it with that then drill and tap the original size. Although I've never used it for this so I can't say if it's a decent fix or not.

Try a self taper if you're not fussed about the bodge, depending on how crucial / tight it needs to be. Just make sure that the thread on the screw isn't bigger than that of the helicoil, else you could end up with a bit of a mess.

If the thread isn't completely mashed you could try using thread lock, or if there is any fresh thread further down the hole you might get away with thread lock and a longer bolt.

Helicoils are pretty cool.

Not too sure if it might be able to fit a larger thread... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APRILIA-RSV-R-...1%7C240%3A1318

Its the black part on the back that is the Throttle position sensor. The black part... Its the highest (the one nearer the actual bottom of the throttle bodies, they are upside down).

I must confess I know very little about helicoil. How does it all work? I might have to take it to a shop to have it done. Sigh. I think I know a place that might be able to help.

What did you do that for?

Helicoil it. A self tapper will leave you in a world of inconvenience and is the bodge of bodges.

A silly sod aint I... Was adjusting the TPS position to read right and when I tightened it I felt it let go. I dont know my own strength. Bah.

Ill give my local Machanic a ring to see what he can do to help. I think ill be ok for a little while as it seems to be holding ok.

Ill have to get a tiny torque ratchet. Bah!

If its only the TPS then there isn't (?) any load, so I'd just loctite both sides and hope for the best.

With Heilcoils you cut a specified larger thread, then wind in what looks like a spring. The external of the 'spring' is the correct thread for the hole you've just cut, and the internal is that you require.

If you get the kit for abour £15? you get the tap included.

Something like this? Guessing at thread size.

This shows you what the inserts look like

sometimes you can get away with tapping it to an imperial equivalent. just find out what metric thread it is then get a 'slightly larger' imperial tap and bolt.

How the hell can I find out what size bolt it is... Sigh.

loctite would be able to hold it ok.... I do doubt it.

Taking the bolt out and measuring it is the generally accepted method...
