i was just sat quietly revising for my theory test on tuesday when something hit me,
![]() i have a full driving liscence and have had for six years now, and i have to retake my theory test to then take my practical test, when some sixteen year old who has never been on the road before can jump on a little scooter and ride around town causing all kinds of havock. now i am not a stupid as to realise that proper bikes are bigger and need much more skill to ride (no a twist and go hairdryer on weels) and also obviously there are some things that are more relevant to bikes than cars . but why is it that they do not have to do some kind of theory test before they can have one of them surley they are less knowlagable than me and more likley to cause an accident out of lack of knowledge. ![]() if i did not already have a driving liscence or not have passed new theory test with haz perception i can understand having to do full test. |

I know exactly what you mean. I have a HGV and a PSV and still had to jump through hoops to get on two wheels.

Plus, the theory test was near enough the same as my car theory test, bar a few motorcycle specific questions and the hazzard perception was the exact same clips!!!

exactly thats what i was thinkin as i was doing the dvd. its not that i think i am scared iam going to fail, its just the goverment is trying to promote being safe etc why not start by giving the little squirts someting to jump through to get a bike even if it is a littletwist n go which dont reach thirty unless goin downhill with tailwind

My daughter, Evie M, who is a member of this forum is, Quote: some sixteen year old who has never been on the road before can jump on a little scooter and ride around town causing all kinds of havock. She is a very careful, considerate scooter rider, who is getting a year of experience before getting her Varadero 125 next March. She will be taking her theory this August. I can understand your question, but please do not be derogatory to our 16 year olds. |

I wanted to take my theory test before I even thought about taking a CBT just because I wanted that knowledge there, not just to be thrown a few questions by the instructor. But that's me personally, I think most people are pleased not to have to go through the whole rigmarole of getting it done just to ride a 125, no matter how useful it be.

![]() You do make a very good point, but IMO, the theory test (or lack thereof) isn't the issue. The issue is, generally speaking, "cotton wool culture." I'm about to leave the office, so I'm short on time, but I'll expand on this when I get the chance. Basically, as adults, many many people try to (rightly) protect their children from the dangers of life. Some people go too far. This leads to the younger members of society having a very different view of 'acceptable risk.' It's this view of 'acceptable risk' that has people causing havok around town etc (regardless of their age). I don't see how we can test people for correct attitude towards driving/riding, as they can easily lie. |

i apologise for any derogatory comment i made lou m but i am proberbly a little biased that way as where i live in preston thare are nearly more scooter riders who are 16-17 years than cars and on more than one occasion have nearly caused accidents by not knowing road rules or just not bothering to follow them because they are with a group of friends and it would not be cool. also when i did my CBt there where five sixteen year olds and the guy soing the cbt asked us basic hazard awareness questions/road rules questions to see what we knew and they where quite unaware.
surely if they did a theory test of some sort it would make them more informed as not all 16 year olds are as concientious as your daughter and would not go looking up information and ride carefully. |
