powering tom tom rider

hi guys

can anyone help me with a small problem
whats the best way to power the tom tom rider i would prefer to have it switched in some way either by ignition or seperate switch i have a curvy svs so how easy is to wire into igniton or is it easier just to put a normal switch in i have a blade fuse holder to wire in aswell also how easy is it to run the cable from the handlebars to battery etc

any help would be great

Well I have a standard power socket attached to the bike, just one of the cheap ones from Maplins with about 3ft of cable to easy move about. Then I got a 12v-5v usb converter from ebay for a few pence. I'll find some links.

Car Accessory Socket - can't find the pre-cabled one I just put some eyes on the end and attached it to the battery.
USB car charger - just plug in where you need it. Has the advantage of being usable in any vehicle.

I'm sure you local Maplins will have all you need.

If you want it switched then I tend to pull the power from the yellow supply (high beam) in the fuse box. I haven't bothered as the socket is under the pillion seat so is always live when needed. It also means when I charge the battery I just plug it into there.

I wired a small power socket (5.5mm dia I think, from Maplins) into a existing hole in my fairing. I did the same on my car dashboard and I'm doing one for Ibby's bike. I put a compatible plug on the Tom Tom's cable. That way it can be used on two different bikes and in the car. The socket in the car is ignition controlled but the ones on the bikes aren't as I wont be leaving the Tom Tom unattended on the bikes. I'm going to rig a mobile phone charger to plug into the same size socket so that I can charge my mobile if camping anywhere.

cool that stuff looks gd but where would i put the socket as i need to have tom tom powered when on bike as the battery on isnt brill can i put a socket up near the clocks somehow would this be safe enough to have the cable coming from there to tom tom mount if its raining etc or should i use the proper cable supplied to power it

how easy is it to run cables from the clocks to the battery is accessible enough ??

As you can see in the photos, my Tom Tom is mounted on a custom made Ram Mount that clamps around the fork stanchion just under the top yoke. This only works on a pointy, this set-up on a curvey obscures the clocks/warning lights. The socket is small and inobstrusive and the wiring follows the wiring loom from the battery. So far I've not had a problem with water getting in the socket when in use, but when not in use it's easy to cover with a piece of insulating/duct tape. The small karabiner in the picture secures the Tom Tom to the clutch cable in case anything vibrates loose, I also tend to feed the cable through the karabiner.

At the moment I have a cable that I run from front and back, but then my set-up has multiple uses. It doesn't just do the TomTom its also for the phone and other things, then my TomTom sits in my tank bag as pointed out having it near the clocks obscures things.
