Default Rear shock fixable?

Hi,
suspension has never been a part of the bike iv overly known how to maintain or take care of and I was wondering how i would go about servicing a knackered back shock or if it would be better to replace it just.
I have an sk1 and the shock is at maximum stiffness but it is still reasonably spongy, riding 2up the bike becomes a nightmare and has a tendancy to destroy number plates into the back wheel.
Is there any parts i can replace in the back shock? (i know the forks have seals n oil etc but iv never takin a back shock apart!)
any advice on how i can get a bit more life out of it would be great because i dont wana have to pour more money into the sv atm!!!!
thanks!

Sadly the Std rear shock can not be serviced. Its a replacment job. Another std one can be found, but are becoming rare with low milage. Shocks form the likes of Nitron, Ohlins etc are probably the way to go.

You can have my sv650s shock. 20,000 dry miles off a 2000 v reg curvy. I have just replaced it with a hagon shock. The shock works fine and went though mot the week before.

PM me if interested.

No you don't! The OP has a curvy (SK1) and as the spring rates are quite different from a pointy, it is not a replacement.

It doesn't matter how f#cked your back shock is, it could have totally collapsed and be sat on the bump-stop... you could have fitted it without a spring in it. But if the tyre is touching the number plate, then you're doing something very wrong! Let me guess, badly fitted tail tidy?

Full and free movement of suspension through the full stroke of the shock is ESSENTIAL for safety.

A big +1 for Nitron. Very, very good performance upgrade. Cost me £360 for a shock that does 20,000 miles between services with only marginal depreciation in ride quality (and even then, provided it's set up correctly it's better than a brand new stock shock). Last service was under £60 and restored it to "as new" ride quality.

This last point is pretty important if you do largeish miles; the cost of having some aftermarket shocks rebuilt just isn't economical in many cases. It's often so expensive that it's cheaper to sell the worn out shock on ebay and buy a new one.
