1st Aid for Bikers

As some of you know I'm an Anaesthetist in Glasgow - but I also teach advanced life support and trauma resuscitation to GP's through an organisation called BASICS (http://www.basics-scotland.org.uk/) and I have a fairly comprehensive medical pack which was supplied to me by a charity called the Sandpiper Trust (http://www.sandpipertrust.org/). Now myself and some colleagues from BASICS who are also bikers are planning to offer sessions teaching 1st aid for bikers at the start of next year and we aim to raise money for the Sandpiper trust in the process. This will not involve how to apply a triangular bandage but will involve how to make a roadside incident safe, how to safely remove your mates helmet, how to open the airway and help their breathing etc.. Strathclyde Police may also make it along and give a 30 min chat on safe riding (or similar) although this is not definitely confirmed. The format for the session will involve lectures and then small group work - hopefully 1 instructor to 5 or 6 people, where we will have mannekins and you will get time to learn and practice useful skills. This will be happening in Glasgow and so far 3 dealerships have potentially offered space in their showrooms to do this in the evening. We will probably be looking at a minimum donation of £10 - 20 per person for this and all of this money will go to the Sandpiper Trust to help equip more GP's to be able to help in their locales.

What I want to know from the ORG'ers before I spend a huge amount of time on this is :
1. Is this a good idea or do we bin it ?
2. Is anyone interested in coming along ? (NB - this session is open to all bikers not just ORG'ers)
3. Does the minimum donation seem reasonable ?

I think that`s an excellent idea and one that could (unfortunately) be useful to all of us. The minimum donation is excellent value as the cheapest First Bike On Scene course I`ve seen advertised was £45.

I think people sometimes think that because they have a basic knowledge of first aid they`re more than equipped to deal with a motorbike accident. Sadly though there`s more to it as you know ie. Snatch rescue, removal of the crash helmet - when, how and why it`s removed and the implications, Spinal care and resuscitation skills with consideration for spinal injury.

If I was out on a ride and god forbid needed somebody trained in first aid then I would hope and pray that I had somebody with me trained in the sort of first aid you`re proposing to teach.

Great Idea!! I would def pay for that, only problem being the distance,being up in Aberdeen, but go for it annd with enough notice would try to make time for such a thing.

I'd also wager that a fair few other IAM groups would be interested in this, even more so if there was a way of bring it closer. If you want me to put it to the Dumfries & Galloway group, PM me and let me know.

it is a very good idea as i have heard lots of people i know say that they wish they had more first aid experience.

C spine injuries are very daunting to a lot of people but is a great skill to know how to deal or not deal with a casualty.
