I'm leaving England on Thursday for a weeks trip up in Scotland. Its going to be a very much spontaneous affair with us organising B&B's in the places we end up when we get there or booking it on the day, on the way.
I last did Scotland on the bike in 2007, when I headed up from Dunoon to Glenuig, and from there we headed up the coast to Ullapool, down to Oban and back home. Last year I stayed in a cabin for a week at Fort William so did the Glencoe/Plockton/Skye stuff albeit rather briefly. Its a longer trip this time and again I want to head up the west to see the best scenery and ride some of the best roads. I dont care if theyre not fast, I want to explore some of "hidden" Scotland. Ive got designs to spend the night at Applecross or Strath depending on where we get to. The first day I intend to break the camels back on the trip and get myself into the Highlands. Glenuig was a great little spot last time around so might go back there, alternatively might look for somewhere else. Can anyone recommend any roads? I'm not sure if this would be better placed in the Ecosse area, however I did think that those who have done Scotland in the past may also have a contribution and wouldnt necessarily find it in the Ecosse area. Your thoughts please..... |

Rob, I can't remember all the details, but when I did my trip after staying in Fort William I went up from Ullapool to overnight in Durness, I think heading off to the point of Stoer on the way up (lots of single carriageway), then heading back via Loch More and Loch Shin, before getting a new rear tyre in Spinningdale then hammering it all the way back to Hawick, via the A939 (Lecht and Glenshee) and some other roads. Not that helpful, but a few ideas...

hidden Scotland, if you want a road that is as much fun (18 miles of it) as you can get (dont go fast its single track and very twisty with hidden dips) Loch Arkaig is the place, only trouble its a dead end so you have all the fun of going back again.. the scenery is breathtaking.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&so...h&z=11&iwloc=A and for a great day out go via Banavie (Neptune's Staircase) http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&so...h&z=15&iwloc=A you can go back via the Commando Memorial with lots to see up that way as well. http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll...27766&t=h&z=16 |

Tim, I'm going to stay in Ullapool again as it was fantastic last time around, real good atmosphere about the place. Durness is a possibility as I was looking to explore further north.
Bibio, funny that all of the roads you have listed, I have managed to cover during my last 2 trips in the car. I found the "hidden glen" by chance, and I was staying not far from Banavie so managed to do that road a few times.. All great ideas keep them coming folks... |
