Hi Guys,
I'm waiting on the results of a M.O.T of a 99 SV650s with 26k on the clock. Went to have a general look over the bike the other day and everything seems ok, well to my untrained eye. The guy, confidentially claimed it would sail through it's next M.O.T, so i took him up on the offer for a new 12 months. I'm just wondering are there any Known faults on a bike of this year and area's to look at? I'm taking a guy with me to have a look and a ride, Any help appreciated. Regards Rob. Like with any bike really you just need to get an overall feeling for its condition. If it looks well cared for then it probably is, if its a bag of nails and is a pig to start I would walk away and find another.
In a brief tyre kicking inspection you are unlikely to be able to give it a proper detailed inspection but take your time and look at what you can. Look for consumables that might need replacing in the near future such as tyres, brake pads, brake discs etc. If they look finished then factor this into your offer. Also look for obvious damage, evidence of it having been crashed. Everything else is likely cosmetic and can be fixed or repaired so really depends on your willingness to remedy any problems or if you just want a trouble free ride. Look carefully at the brake calipers, if the pins have not been coated in copper grease before applying they will be seized and a major job when it comes to replacing the pads.
similarly look at the brake pistons, the outer dust seals stick to the piston and get torn out on a poorly maintained bike, this will cause the pistons not to back off properly leading to excessive brake disc and pad wear. Look at the wiring loom where it passes the riders seat, this is a favourite point for chaffing and all sorts of ongoing electrical faults. The suspension on SVs is basic. Ask the owner if the front springs have been replaced, then the obvious when and what with, when was the fork oil last changed, same with brake fluids. Original rubber hoses on a 99 is indicative of a lack of preventative maintenance. I am not saying they will be perished but I personally would not be comfortable with 10 year old hoses. look at the chain/sprockets. I would guess at 26,000 that they would be toward the end of the second set. budget £100 to replace yourself, again the tyres. if in doubt budget a further £150.

The hoses will be knackered, guaranteed. Not dangerous, or an MOT fail, but not conducive to effective brakes.

Thanks for all the pointers guys.
Bike flew through M.OT. Mate inspected and test rode, everything ok, suggested new front tyre, and hose's didn't look brill, so will be replacing them with braided. I can't ride yet, so got plenty of time to ensure all sweet. Regards Rob. |

Update,
Bike just had service and rear pads changed. Going over to a mechanic mate later this week to have new brake fluid changed and general all over inspection, Inc valve shims. Chain and sprocket de-greased cleaned and re-lubricated, Chain looks to be in general good condition, so should see out my first couple of months of riding, before being replaced. Just contemplating a Abba stand and front lift, will allow me to get into it properly for a good all over clean. Next week it's tires, Looking at Conti road attacks presently, just researching a little bit more. All front end panels have been removed polished and waxed, with the rears coming off tonight/tomorrow. Deadline for completion is 29/07, start DAS 20/07 with module 1 on the 22/07,part 2 on the 30th and hopefully I'll be out having my first solo ride later that day. Rob. |

Little smear of vaselene? Nah, fill the backs of the connectors with it.

I would take the left hand seat bolt out to stop it rubbing through to the wires behind and be prepared to replace the reg/ rec and the battery very shortly.
