Default iPod - DFU Brick!!! ARRRRR

So anybody else have their iPod turn into a paperweight everytime it tries to update the software through iTunes running on a PC with vista or XP?

I do like my iPod touch, a lot, but this is a common problem, that just shouldn't be.

my old nano used to do it (before I lost it!), and my o/h's 80g classic does it to he point where it's packed up altogether - he reckons the battery's died. My newer classic's fine so far tho.
