Steering lock - stuck off?

Evening all,

What could be the cause of not being able to engage the steering lock, even if the bars are fully turned to the full lock position?


The key goes through ON and OFF, but wont go round to LOCK or (P) for the parking light. It just .... sticks. Have tried a little oil, WD40 (not together of course), gentle persuasion and brute force. The key would snap first.


Not an SV though, but I guess the mechanism is the same on a Suzuki GZ (the barrel looks identical.....and its a 2003 model, so I've no reason to believe otherwise....)

Tried pushing the key down? nudging the bars at slightly different angles (starting at full lock)?
I've always found each bike has it's own 'knack'

I wish I was more patient with things.....

Mine occasionally does this, bit of waggling and jiggling and it'll eventually lock and then be fine for a few weeks.

you may have turned the bars too far.

Similar thing happend to me last year with my GZ, it turned out that the clear plastic cover on top of the barrell (to stop your keys scrathing it) had inadvertantly been pushed into the barrell and was stopping the key turning. I used tweezers to pick it all out (murder!)

This all sounds incredibly painful
