iv got an oxford first time tank bag and its spot on, only small tho but its big enough to fit in a set of clothes and a couple of odds an sods, cost me 35quid brand new off ebay, bit of a tip tho!, the magnets can scratch your tank as they move slightly when your on the move so i got some anti slip matting (can get this from halfords, also used on a car dashboard to stop things sliding about), and cut it out to the same shape as the bottom of the tank bag, its thin enough so the magnets still hold but stops the tankbag scratching your tank, hope this helps!

I've used tankbags since I first started riding and I've never had one scratch a tank before. You just need to make sure that there is no dust on the base or the tank before you put the bag on...simple.
As for recommending one, I've always used the Oxford sport types but Hein Gericke do their own brand which is a bit cheaper or you could go the Kriega or Bagster route if you like. If you just want the map holder, then I'd go for the HG one. cheap as chips and does exactly what it says on the tin. |

If its only a map holder you are after and you want it cheap then.....
I saw somebody a while ago using a plastic bag with magnets in (I think it was Stu). You could use one of the zip seal type bags and put some magnets in. Cheap as chips and does the job. |

i used to use one of those plastic wallet things that you use in ring binders and then just tape it to the tank with some insulation tape

Same here, especially for my own directions without a map. But i do have a magnetic map holder too. This is just easier, lol.
