The rear sub frame on my K3 is begining to go rusty, so I want to remove it to strip it and re-paint it. Is this a major job? What problems should I look out for and will I need any specialist tools?
Last of all, how long will it take roughly to remove. Thanks. Tim. |

I would strip the plastics off and repair it in place as there is a lot involved in taking the subframe off.

Pretty easy, if it helps take a few pics once the bodywork is removed that you can use for reference when you put it back together.
Dont forget the tip over sensor has a right way up and a wrong way up (there is an arrow on it that should point upwards. Its a small matchbox sized black thing just in front of the battery box. If you dont have the right way up the bike will not start ![]() Also, be gentle if you decide to remove any of the wiring loom connectors, especially to the ecu. |

To remove, if you've never done this before, allow 1-2 hours. The process is roughly:
- remove side covers and seat - pop plastic rivets along the rear bodywork and remove the four retaining bolts under the seats. - remove the grab rail - unhook rear seat release cable from the seat locking mechanism - lift off rear plastics - release electrical cable ties and unhook fuses etc. - Disconnect and remove battery - unbolt battery box / undertray plastics and remove - undo four bolts that hold the subframe on, and lift away. - careful not to snag on the electrics.

It's pretty simple to get off. Don't bother painting it though, you'll just end up painting it again next year. Get it powdercoated. That's what I plan to do this winter

My K3 subframe is away getting powdercoated the noo. P/coat is a better than factory finish compared to paint.
My tip is to get some different colours of electrical tape and colour code all the connectors (for there are many) you undo. A lot easier when you route the loom back in and re-assemble,( in my case months later!) |
