Default Brake pad markings

got some second brakes caliper which are in good order, got the pads out and found these pit markings, any ideas how these are form?

btw, these are golfren HH pads (is because they are made of cheaper material?)

you mean you just bought the calipers AND pads? second hand. looks like maybe someones gouged them with a screwy a bit perhaps.

I think he means they just happened to come with his replacement calipers? and is wondering what the markings are, dunno personally but from the shapes I'd guess not from a rotating disc so just oxidisation or other reaction?

yep, both are secondhands, pads came with calipers, caliper themself are in good working order.

there caused by someone using a screw driver or similar to push the pistons back into the caliper when there still fitted to the bike.

Ah, haven't quite grasped the need for gouging them, but I guess I got lucky on mine still moving easy enough to return by hand?

Yes, sounds like you don't need to service your calipers brettus (did you see my post?)

Yeah I read through that, thanks as always for the advice, haven't tried the fronts yet but I'm hoping they are as good. I think the backs must have got most of the road gunk from the past two years, fingers crossed.

Lucas, whats the need for the new calipers? (sorry I'm just getting my head around them and potential problems at the moment so I'm annoyingly curious )

just so I can take my time to overhaul the original (better condition) calipers while I run the bike on spare calipers through nasty winter
